Besiktas and Antalyaspor Fans Rain Toys for the Victims of the Devastating Earthquake

Monday the world of football experienced another heartwarming moment after fans of Besiktas and Antalyaspor showered toys on the field to donate to the young survivors of the earthquake. The Turkish clubs caught the attention of the entire world with this gesture of solidarity.

The match had to be stopped at 4:17 minutes when the fans started to fling soft toys. The time signifies the time when the first earthquake rocked the country. The quake has completely devastated the southern region of the country and has left hundreds of thousands of people homeless.

Fans of both teams started filling up the sidelines with thousands of plush toys and scarves. The players and coaching staff of both teams collected the toys which will be a part of the relief effort.

On February 6, two massive tremors of 7.7 and 7.8 magnitudes razed southeastern Turkey and Syria to the ground. The quakes hit nine hours apart, compounding the damage. According to reports, there were around 200 aftershocks that followed the initial hits and some even went up to 6 on the Richter scale.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) reported on February 24 that the combined death toll might even surpass 50,000. Turkey bore the brunt of the damage as it recorded a death toll of 48000, reported last week. 1,60,000 buildings containing 5,20,000 apartments have also been completely decimated. While building structure is to be blamed for most of the buildings collapsing, the country is now struggling to rehome and relocate those who have been brought to the streets. 

Some reports have estimated that to rehome 1.5 million people, at least 5,00,000 new homes would be required. The government is planning to build 2,00,000 apartments and 70,000 village houses now to catalyse the relief effort. The entire cost of the project is going to be around $25 billion according to American analyst firm JP Morgan. 

The United Nations Development Programme has asked for $113.5 million from the UN just to clean away the rubble left by the tremor.

New Earthquake Hits Turkey

A 5.6 magnitude quake again hit the already devastated region of Turkey on Monday. The recent tremor was epicentred at Yesilyurt in Malatya province.

As this region was severely damaged earlier this month, a lot of the buildings which stood were severely hit. This has resulted in a lot of buildings just collapsing. The details of the extent of new devastation caused by the latest quake is yet to be known but people close to the matter think that there was nobody to be at risk as the previous disaster has already done the damage
