After a brittle start to their campaign, Birmingham City is set to appoint a familiar face in the Championship. In an official statement by the club’s hierarchy, they want to instill a culture of ambition and glory. They are confident Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney is their ideal candidate.

With aims to achieve promotion to the Premier League, Birmingham City have axed their coveted manager John Eustace. He secured a 17th-place finish for the club last season. However, the club seems dissatisfied with that achievement as they have invested heavily in their squad.

With Rooney’s return to the Championship, its apparent attention will be at an all-time high with the club. Rooney had served a decent campaign with Derby County but failed to get them promoted due to their 21-point deduction mid-season.

He might also be interested in convincing some players from United to join him at Birmingham to help the club. Standing sixth in the league with three defeats in the current season, Birmingham still has a good chance at promotion as Ipswich and Leceister are increasing the margin. The former England captain has displayed his managerial skills. Still, it will be interesting to witness if he can instill the ‘winning mentality’ that the management expects from him.

Wayne Rooney’s record as a manager

Wayne Rooney has consistently been recognized as a force in football, such as when he took charge of a struggling Derby County. With odds stacked against him following a 21-point deduction for breaching (FFP) Financial Fair Play rules, the club was penalized. Despite his attempts to stabilize the team, they suffered relegation to League One.

The club fell into administration, leaving Rooney in a challenging situation. After serving two years in the Championship, Rooney returned to his former club in the MLS. He ended his tenure with 24 wins in his 85 matches that he stayed at the club’s helm.

Rooney managed DC United with the ambition to guide the club to the playoffs but failed as they suffered with some minor improvements during his tenure. He managed to win just 14 wins in charge of the club in the 53 games that he managed. With links to Birmingham City, Rooney is set to embark on a new managerial journey and will finally be looking to win some silverware.
