Brazil announces 26-man squad for 2022 FIFA World Cup
Brazil
Five-time winners of the World Cup, Brazil is the most successful team in the competition’s history, but the Selecao hasn’t won the prized trophy since 2002. In 2006, 2010, and 2018, there were quarterfinal exits, while in 2014, after a forgettable campaign, they had to settle for fourth place. Neymar, Vinicius Junior, and other players must now end the Selecao’s trophy drought and bring home the trophy once more.
But before they face tougher obstacles in the final rounds, they must first get past Cameroon, Switzerland, and Serbia. The South American powers are the top-ranked squad entering the 2022 competition, and many of the players on manager Tite’s list will be well-known figures who play for some of the biggest club teams in the world.
Prior to the tournament, Tite’s team had won seven straight games and had gone 15 games without a loss. However, the team will still be affected by the prolonged World Cup drought given the pressure at home as they attempt to win their sixth World Cup.
Brazil is the most successful team in the FIFA World Cup
Brazil have won five titles and placed second, third, and fourth twice apiece, making them the most successful national team in World Cup history. Brazil joined Argentina, Spain, and Germany as nations that have won the FIFA World Cup outside of their home continents (Sweden in 1958, Chile in 1962, Mexico in 1970, the United States in 1994, and South Korea/Japan in 2002).
Brazil is the only national team to have participated in every FIFA World Cup without missing any games or having to go through a playoff process. With a record of 73 wins in 109 games played, a goal difference of 124, 237 points, and only 18 losses, Brazil has the best overall World Cup performance in both proportional and absolute terms.
Currently, Neymar needs three more goals to surpass Pele’s record and take Selecao’s all-time scoring crown. With a first-half penalty conversion against Tunisia, the Paris Saint-Germain attacker took a step closer to breaking that record and igniting Brazil’s penultimate friendly before the 2022 World Cup. The 30-year-old, widely regarded as the best player to represent his nation at this age, will attempt to add to his goal total this year and secure his place in history.
