Brentford owner Matthew Benham has reportedly put up the iconic club for sale, 17 years after first buying the club in 2007. The London-based club has reportedly been valued at £400 million, which any new investor might have to pay.

The data analysis expert and businessman, Matthew Benham, had initially invested £3 million to clear some of the club’s debts. At that time, Brentford was competing in the fourth and the lowest tier of the English football league system. Following the successful rise of the club to the Premier League, the Smartodds owner has now put the club up for sale. It has been valued at £400 million, a hundred times more than its initial value.

The English businessman has reportedly hired Rothschild and Co. to oversee a process involving the sale of a controlling stake and examine investment opportunities. Rothschild is expected to start the formal process soon, with football experts anticipating that the Bees will draw interest from American investors and Middle Eastern firms. Benham’s contributions to the club also facilitated its relocation from Griffin Park to the modern Gtech Community Stadium.

Benham may retain a minority stake in the club. Moreover, Brentford will join a list of high-profile EPL clubs exploring a partial or outright sale. This list includes Manchester United’s recent acquisition of a minority stake by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and West Ham’s sale of a 10% share.

Brentford FC’s exponential rise under the ownership of Matthew Benham

Brentford FC has been one of the English football league’s most impressive success stories over the past years. Under the ownership of Matthew Benham, the club created history by rising from the lower divisions of the English football system to becoming a Premier League club in 2021.

Matthew Benham initially invested £500,000 in the London-based club in 2006, followed by nearly £3 million the following year, eventually becoming the majority owner within five years. The Bees then went on to win the EFL League Two in 2008, securing promotion to League One. After five seasons in the third tier, the club was promoted to the EFL Championship in 2014.

The Bees scripted history in 2021 when they got promoted to the EPL after a gap of almost 30 years. They finished the subsequent two seasons in the Premier League in 13th and 9th positions, respectively, and currently sit 14th in the standings.
