Captain of the Team Stuck in Thai Cave Passed Away at 17 in England

In a tragic turn of fate, Duangphet Phromthep, the captain of the football team who was rescued from the waterlogged cave in Thailand in 2018, passed away earlier in February. Phromthep was 17 and was living in the UK where he was also playing in a football academy.

The cause of the death was never officially announced. Phromthep moved to England and was studying at Brook House College in Leicester where he received a football scholarship. On February 12, paramedics were called to his dorm where he was found unconscious. He was taken to the Kettering General Hospital where he breathed his last on February 14.

The Brooke House College Football Academy’s principal Ian Smith had said at the time, “We unite in grief with all of Dom’s family, friends, former teammates and those involved in all parts of his life, as well as everyone affected in any way by this loss in Thailand and throughout the college’s global family.”

Although police at the time said that the cause of the death was nothing suspicious, the fact that the coroner’s report has evaded the public eye has not helped keep the transparency. According to a report by Sky, Professor Catherine Mason, senior coroner for Leicester City and South Leicestershire, said that a provisional cause of death was identified. However, the official did not part with any information. She said, “A cause of death has been provided. The cause of death is provisional until the formal hearing. Investigations and inquiries are continuing and I’m not in a position to proceed.” A review hearing is also scheduled to be held on July 6.

Back in 2018, Phromthep, known as Dom, and 11 other boys of the Wild Boar football team along with their coach went to visit the Tham Luang Nang Non cave system. They were accompanied by their 25-year-old coach, Ekkaphon Kanthawong.

When they were ready to get out of the cave, the entire system flooded and all the boys were stuck inside. They were all aged between 11 to 16. The news made headlines worldwide as the local government attempted to rescue the children.

After 18 agonizing days, the Thai navy SEALs found a way to reach the children who were 2 kilometres inside. The rescue operation was also extremely treacherous as one of the SEALs lost his life during the process. The death was deemed to have been a result of asphyxiation. Another member of the rescue force also lost their life later in a hospital.

The coach of the team, who was also stuck inside the cave, issued a heartfelt letter right after the passing of Dom. Reading the letter, one would understand that he was extremely attached to his students and was excited to see them fulfil their dreams.

The letter read, “Didn’t you ask me to cheer you once you’re in the national league? Why did you break the promise? Didn’t we make all the plans when you come back to play football and go cycling with us? Since you were young, you kept saying that you wanted to play in the national league. Why didn’t you do as you said?”

The entire Thai cave incident shook the world and earlier last year, Netflix launched a six-episode series on the incident. Amazon also made a feature film on the rescue operation last year. Now, the world waits for the hearing in July to understand what actually resulted in the death of Dom.
