Chelsea agrees £45 million deal with Manchester City to sign Raheem Sterling

Chelsea’s new owners are set to make their first marquee signing after reaching an agreement with Manchester City for a fee of up to £45 million for Raheem Sterling. The England winger has already agreed to personal terms on a five-year contract with an option of a further year.

Chelsea, who will make Sterling their highest-paid player with a weekly wage of just over £300,000, will complete the signing once the 27-year-old passes his medical. The deal is a significant boost for Chelsea’s new co-owner, Todd Boehly, who has temporarily taken charge of the club’s recruitment.

Thomas Tuchel is looking to improve his attacking options and identified Sterling as a key target at the start of the summer. Tuchel wants more ruthlessness in the final third, and he has had positive discussions with Sterling about where he will fit in at Chelsea, who are also in talks with City about signing Netherland international Nathan Ake.

Sterling joined Manchester City from Liverpool in July 2015 for an initial fee of £49 million and has been instrumental in their success under Pep Guardiola. At the Etihad Stadium, he won four Premier League titles, one FA Cup, and three League Cups while scoring 131 goals in 339 appearances for the reigning Premier League champions.

Chelsea needs reinforcements in defense with the departure of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen

Chelsea

Chelsea requires defensive reinforcements after losing Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen on free transfers. A deal for Ake should be simple if they offer Manchester City more than £40 million. Tuchel has long admired Ake, who came through Chelsea’s youth system before joining Bournemouth in 2017 and attempted to sign him when he was manager of Borussia Dortmund.

In addition to Ake, Chelsea’s defensive targets include Juventus’s Matthijs de Ligt, Paris Saint-Germain’s Presnel Kimpembe, Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly, and Sevilla’s Jules Kounde. Bayern Munich is also interested in signing De Ligt.

Chelsea wants to give Tuchel a large sum of money this summer. They are still interested in signing Raphinha after agreeing to a fee of £55 million with Leeds. They are competing with Barcelona for Raphinha, who prefers to move to Spain.
