Chelsea and RB Leipzig negotiating for around $90m over in-demand defender Josko Gvardiol
Josko Gvardiol
In their pursuit of RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol, Chelsea is hoping to gain an advantage over their opponents.
Sportsmail has learned that the two clubs are negotiating a deal in which the highly regarded Croatian defender would be acquired by Chelsea before Thursday’s transfer deadline but would then be loaned back to the German team for the remainder of the current campaign before moving to Stamford Bridge the following summer.
Along with teams like Manchester City and Tottenham, Chelsea was one of the organisations this summer that expressed interest in the 20-year-old. The list of defenders Chelsea has shown interest in includes Gvardiol, but Leipzig has been categorical that he is not for sale.
However, the Blues are still interested in signing him, and they are working on a solution with their purchase and loan back plan. In the meanwhile, Chelsea added the adaptable Marc Cucurella, who can play as a left-sided centre back, as well as Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli and Wesley Fofana from Leicester.

So far Josko Gvardiol’s had a wonderful career
After being linked with Leeds, Gvardiol left Dinamo Zagreb for Leipzig in September 2020 for about £14, making him the most expensive Croatian youngster ever. He finished that season on loan at Dinamo before joining Leipzig permanently in the summer of 2016.
During the 2021–22 season, Gvardiol appeared in nearly 50 games for Leipzig, soon made an impression on the squad, and helped Domenico Tedesco’s team win the German Cup, finish fourth in the Bundesliga, and advance to the Europa League semifinals. And as a result of his performances in Germany and throughout Europe, he is expected to one day rank among the top centre backs in the world.
