Chelsea emerge as prime contenders to sign AC Milan’s high profile striker: Reports

The brilliant Portuguese teenager Rafael Leao of AC Milan has reportedly held negotiations with Chelsea about a potential summer transfer, according to journalist Simon Phillips.
According to the Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, Chelsea will need to spend up to £127 million to convince the Serie A powerhouses to part with their prized asset. Given how close the transfer window is to closing, it seems almost impossible that the defending Italian champions will move the player.
Another thing to clarify is why Chelsea would want a guy with Rafael Leao’s resume. The Blues have a good amount of wide players, therefore their real need is a quality striker. The Portuguese international plays on the wing, where his skills are most effective.
Leao is as an unusually tall 188 cm for a winger, but he exploits his size and strength to overwhelm opponents and raid the left flank. At San Siro, the Portuguese prodigy and Theo Hernandez have forged an exceptional relationship that ranks them among the world’s top full-back-winger combinations.
Leao’s deal with the Rossoneri runs through 2024. One thing that Chelsea might benefit from is this. The Italian powerhouses run the risk of losing the brilliant Portuguese for a steal next summer if they are unable to sell him this summer and Leao rejects a new contract.
What did Rafeal Leao do, to get the attention of Chelsea
Leao moved from Lille to AC Milan in 2019. He has consistently been among the top wide men in the Italian top division. He would be a fantastic addition to any team, but given the price at which he is expected to be offered, the Blues would be better off delaying this purchase until the next transfer window.
Leao has had a solid start to the Serie A season, scoring one goal and dishing out one assist in three games. If he stays, he will play a significant role in AC Milan’s title defence, and given the current situation, it is likely that he will remain at San Siro.
It will be interesting to observe how the Blues’ interest progresses. Currently, it doesn’t appear that this interest is anything significant, but there may be surprises.
