Chelsea in pole position to sign PSG star Neymar as they look to replace Romelo Lukaku: Reports
Neymar Jr
Chelsea are thought to be in pole position to make a stunning move for Neymar, with several other top European clubs vying for his services. Last season, Neymar played for Paris Saint-Germain, where he was part of the team that was eliminated from the Champions League by Real Madrid. Following that setback, the Brazilian was booed by his own fans.
With Mauricio Pochettino on his way out of the Parc des Princes and a new sporting director in Luis Campos, the French capital is set for a shake-up. The departure of Brazilian superstar Neymar appears to be part of that reshuffling.
In the summer of 2017, the Ligue 1 champions paid a world record of £198 million to sign him from Barcelona. But he has failed to live up to the expectations that came with such a high fee, failing to bring PSG’s most elusive dream, a Champions League trophy to fruition.
According to various reports, Neymar’s attitude and poor form have led to PSG executives being willing to let him go. His friendship with Kylian Mbappe has also cooled in recent years, with the young Frenchman now emerging as the club’s franchise player.
Chelsea are looking for replacing the outgoing disastrous signing Romelu Lukaku
Given the financial state of Europe’s other top clubs, a move to the Premier League appears to be the most likely destination. With Romelu Lukaku heading out on loan at Inter Milan and Armando Borja on the verge of leaving, the Blues require attacking reinforcements. Despite his relatively poor performance last season, Neymar would undoubtedly bring that.
Barcelona and Real Madrid are seen as the closest challengers to Chelsea’s hopes, though both have been hampered by financial constraints. Newcastle is also said to be interested, though reports suggest that Neymar is unlikely to join the Magpies.
Manchester United and Manchester City are thought to be close behind those three clubs, with the Red Devils looking to rebound from a disastrous season of their own.
