Mauricio Pochettino and Chelsea suffered an unexpected defeat at the hands of EFL Championship team Middlesbrough. Even though fans breathed a sigh of relief at the time of the draw, Tuesday’s match saw the Blues fall 1-0 to Middlesbrough in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final, much to the disappointment of fans. As such, the team has been heavily trolled on social media.

Chelsea went into the tie feeling confident about a win, having managed to avoid a Premier League team in the draw. The other semi-final features Liverpool against Fulham, set to kick-off later on Wednesday night. Chelsea began the game in full swing, as Cole Palmer let a golden chance in front of the goal go wide. The hosts quickly punished Pochettino and co. as Hayden Hackney finished off a move, flicking the ball past Dorde Petrovic.

Chelsea starlet Cole Palmer had a night to forget as he missed two more crucial chances in front of goal. Connor Gallagher‘s shot in the second half also went agonizingly wide of the post.

Even though Chelsea have a chance to redeem themselves in the second half, it wouldn’t be without harsh trolls and criticism on the internet. The second leg of the semi-final is set to kick off on 24th January.

Even though Chelsea were on a three-game winning streak before the game against Middlesbrough, a loss on Tuesday highlighted the state of their season. With Chelsea participating in only the Premier League, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup, a potential elimination in the EFL Cup may see the Blues go trophyless this year.

A fan commented that Chelsh*t is back, following the shocking defeat. Others mocked how a 1 billion squad couldn’t even manage to overcome the ‘mighty’ Middlesbrough. Some were quick to point out how Pochettino has had a history of going trophyless with Tottenham and that he carried the curse to Chelsea. Others called for Mauricio Pochettino‘s sacking and laughed at the ‘mid-table’ club.

Some even trolled Cole Palmer for his poor finishing on the night. Even though the youngster has been Chelsea’s best player so far this season, his game against Middlesbrough was one to forget. The most embarrassing club in the world and joke of a club were some of the labels given to the team. In a shocking statistic, Chelsea have the third most defeats in the Premier League since the start of last season. They are currently 10th with 12 points behind the top four.
