Chelsea FC are reportedly unlikely to stand in the way of Thiago Silva if he informs the club that he wishes to make an emotional return to Fluminense this summer. Silva only signed a one-year extension to his contract in February. But he has been linked with a return to Brazil to finish his career at the club which rescued his career after he contracted tuberculosis. This happened while he was on loan at Dynamo Moscow.
The 38-year-old joined Chelsea from Paris-Saint-Germain on a free transfer three years ago. Although he is not among the players the club plan to actively try to move on at the end of this season as part of the bid to cut the size of the squad. But the club may not stand in Silva’s way if he expresses a desire to move back to Fluminense.
Incoming head coach, former Tottenham Hotspurs chief, Mauricio Pochettino will reportedly be consulted on the future of all of Chelsea’s players. Chelsea would demand any sort of fee for Silva. He has reportedly been approached by Fluminense president Mario Bittencourt and former striker Fred about returning to his boyhood club.
Silva reportedly made his frustration at Chelsea’s disappointing season clear following the Champions League elimination to Real Madrid. He has accused co-controlling owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali of making an “incorrect step.”
In a past interview, Silva said, “Fluminense is the club I would like to finish at. It was the club where I played after I had my illness and it’s the club who opened the door for me after that stage and believed in me when nobody thought Thiago Silva would still make it as a player. As incredible as it may seem, it’s the club that I support as well.”
