Chelsea supporters sign petition for referee Anthony Taylor to be banned from officiating their matches after a series of high-profile events
Chelsea
Thousands of people have signed a petition demanding that referee Anthony Taylor be prohibited from officiating Chelsea games following Sunday’s tense match that ended in a 2-2 draw against Tottenham.
Around 16,000 people have signed the change as of this writing. The org petition claims that “Anthony Taylor has continued to make big decisions against Chelsea over the years in big matches. Taylor has an agenda against Chelsea and should not be allowed to referee a game involving the club again.”
The creator of the petition continues by listing a number of complaints they have against Taylor and citing instances that, in their opinion, “prove” he shouldn’t be permitted to officiate club matches. They included both of Tottenham’s goals from Sunday at Stamford Bridge, where Harry Kane’s injury-time equalizer saved a point for the Lily Whites.
Tottenham’s Cristian Romero clearly tugged at Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella’s hair just before Kane’s goal, but he didn’t receive a caution. Additionally, there was debate surrounding Tottenham’s first equalizer of the game, which was scored by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg but was upheld despite Richarlison’s offside position.
After reviewing the incident with VAR Mike Dean, it was determined that the Brazilian forward wasn’t obstructing Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy’s view.
Kalidou Koulibaly and Reece James had given Chelsea the lead twice in the game, but they ultimately had to settle for a draw in a contentious game that saw Blues manager Thomas Tuchel and Tottenham’s former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte receive red cards after shoving on the touchline after Hojbjerg’s goal and again at the end.
Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel also had problems with referee Anthony Taylor
At the end of the match, Tuchel acknowledged that he does have an issue with Anthony Taylor. “Absolutely,” he said when asked if the fans were right to disagree with his decisions. “I can assure you that it’s not just the fans, the whole dressing room thinks that. I cannot understand how the first goal is not a foul or how a player can be pulled by the hair during a corner.”
“I am curious what the explanation is. Both [Tottenham] goals should not stand.” On his clash with Conte, he added: “I just compared it to two players who have a fight on the field. If you have a hard tackle and a far tackle and you go and apologize. Both of us were fighting with our teams. There were no insults and no one got hurt. For me, it was not a big deal.”
