Wednesday was not a good day for London clubs to say the least. While Arsenal was beaten by FC Porto in the Champions League, the Chelsea Under-18 squad had a far worse night in the FA Youth Cup. The Blues were up against seemingly ‘easy’ opposition in Millwall FC but fell to the hosts 4-2 on penalties.

The footballing community has taken notice of the shocking result, with fans having a field day mocking the Blues for their loss. The game ended 1-1 as goals from Harrison Murray-Campbell and Jack Howland canceled out each other. A physical Millwall side prevented the Blues from finding their tempo in a fairly even game.

Penalties followed, and the final result was cruel to an exhausted bunch of Chelsea players. Chelsea’s undoing in the shootout came when Leo Cardoso‘s penalty was saved and Michael Golding‘s effort exceeded the bar. The young Chelsea players looked distraught as Millwall mustered a huge upset in the competition.

The Blues will quickly look to bounce back from the loss and shift all their attention to the league campaign. They face Aston Villa next in a Premier League Under-18 game.

Fans laugh at Chelsea as Blues upset by Millwall

Premier League giants Chelsea and their Under-18 counterparts have struggled to grab silverware this season. A fan, however, was confident of his side’s prowess and history in the competition. He said that Chelsea have enough FA Youth Cups to give away (to other teams) and still have more. Others said that all London clubs have had a rough night on Wednesday.

Some fans even said that the Millwall youth players showed more heart than the players of their first team. Waves of praise for the young lads came flowing soon after the win, with fans making no effort to hide their excitement.

Into the final four, the supporters did not forget the heroics from Under-18 keeper Penney Jr., who made a crucial save in the shootout. As for the other London club, Arsenal, the night ended with a loss against Porto in the first leg of the Round of 16. A solitary goal from Galeno in the 94th minute meant that Arsenal failed to answer their opponents ‘challenge’ made before the game.
