Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo, in a recent interaction with GOAL was asked to make some difficult choices among players in a game of ‘This or That’. The Dutchman surprised fans by opting for Lionel Messi over the late Argentine legend Diego Maradona.
The 24-year-old player, who is currently playing in the Premier League with Liverpool, is enjoying a decent season, as the team leads the Premier League with 45 points from 20 games. He joined Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven in 2022 for £44 million, tallying 51 appearances and 15 goals. The Dutchman is yet to match his form from his five seasons at Eindhoven, where he netted 55 goals in 150 matches.
Cody Gakpo played the game of ‘This or That’ trivia with GOAL, where he chose his national and club captain Virgil van Dijk over Sergio Ramos, Mohamed Salah over Luis Suarez, Arjen Robben over Neymar, and Robin van Persie over Wayne Rooney.
However, the most surprising pick was Lionel Messi over the 1986 World Cup winner, Diego Maradona. But the large part of the fans on the net agreed with the Liverpool star.
Meanwhile, many fans online implied that the choices were overall biased. Cody Gakpo, in a couple of instances, favored picks based on club and Dutch nationalities.

Gakpo has appeared 25 times for the Reds this season, scoring eight goals and providing two assists, occasionally featuring in the club’s midfield. With a surplus of players across positions, Klopp faces selection challenges.
Meanwhile, Gakpo, a consistent starter in recent times, might feature in the midfield against Arsenal in the FA Cup, speculated by pundits to offer more playing time for the Dutchman. He has demonstrated versatility in attack and midfield roles for the Netherlands and his previous club, PSV Eindhoven.
