TV presenter Colin Cowherd has taken a swipe at the USWNT. He has said that they aren’t ready for a new dynasty. They had a very underwhelming performance in the recent Women’s World Cup. They came into the tournament as the overwhelming favorites winning the last two editions of the tournament. It had a huge buzz going into it, with many considering the team unbeatable.
In the wake of all this, they ended up having a very underwhelming performance in the tournament. The presenter has said that it is not easy to win three World Cups in a row which is why no one has done it yet. The US Women’s team is going through a transitional period where they would need a rebuild to sustain themselves.
He gave an example of Basketball teams like the San Antonio Spurs and Los Angeles Lakers who went through a rebuilding period too. He also gave the example of the New England Patriots who are now in a period of changes after the departure of Tom Brady. The presenter said, “Rebuilding dynasties is hard. The Patriots post-Tom Brady, it’s hard. Spurs without Duncan. Older players, older cultures trying to bridge the gap, sometimes you fire a coach and move on to a new coach. That’s what the United States women did. A dynasty in the middle of the rebuild.”
Thus, there are many teams that can be taken as an example for the USWMT. The presenter said that they need time to recuperate and come back as a better team with possibly new personnel. Only then, could the team go through another dominant phase again.
USWNT at the World Cup

The USWNT had a dubious run in the tournament. Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe spearheaded the team as the most known starters in the team. They were part of huge controversies too, due to their outspoken nature regarding social issues. Due to this, they garnered a huge amount of critics who were waiting for a chance to bash them if they slip up. While they started with a win against Vietnam 3-0, they couldn’t back up that performance after that.
They drew to the Netherlands in their second game 1-1 which was the first instance of them slipping up in their performance. Later, they almost got knocked out by Portugal when they almost scored at the last minute.
A loss would mean the USWNT would be eliminated in the group stages. But they held on to a goalless draw and made it into the last 16. They faced Sweden where they finally started to show up. They played well and controlled possession for most of the game but couldn’t seem to manage to score. The game went onto the penalty shootouts where they lost to Sweden. Megan Rapinoe was one of the players in the team who missed a penalty. Thus her critics found a reason to go at her.
