Antony’s past couple of months have been problematic for him. He had a huge drop in form, failing to score or assist since May. Along with that, he was accused of domestic abuse, causing him to miss matches for Brazil and Manchester United.
Last scoring in April, he went over seven months without a goal and assist. He was often criticized due to his terrible form, being called the worst winger in the league as well. Manager Erik Ten Hag still trusted the Brazilian, whom he worked with in Ajax.
He finally repaid his manager’s trust by scoring and assisting during United’s recent 2-4 win over Newport County in the FA Cup. He was the first to assist as Bruno Fernandes scored in the 7th minute. After doubling the lead thanks to a goal by academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo, United’s lead was gone by the 47th minute.
United searched for a goal in the next 20 minutes and finally got it in the 67th minute. Luke Shaw tried curling the ball in the top right corner past the keeper, but hit the post instead. The ball fell to the feet of Antony, who just tapped it in an open net. Rasmus Hojlund did score the winner, with the game finishing 4-2.
The Newport County fans, who were vocal throughout the game, decided to start taking digs at the Brazilian winger by referencing his past accusations. They started singing “Antony is a r*pist,” which confused a couple of commentators.
The match was covered on the radio by the BBC and the commentator thought the fans were singing “Antony is the greatest”, before realizing what the crowd was singing.
Fans laughing in tears as BBC commentators mess up the crowd’s chant
The fan who shared the audio clip on Twitter revealed he had to stop driving as he couldn’t hold back his laughter. One commented how the recent weekend was amazing for English football referencing the clashes between Wolves and West Brom fans, Maidstone’s win and a Maidstone fan falling off a tier of a stadium while celebrating.
Here are some of the fans’ reactions:
When the commentator realized what the fans were chanting, they apologized to the listeners. This was the first game where the winger had any contributions since May 2023, where he assisted in a 2-0 win over Wolves. Now United face Wolves in the Molineux Stadium on the night of 2nd February.
