“Cristiano makes his own choice” – Bruno Fernandes and his Manchester United teammates in the dark about the Portuguese’s return at Old Trafford

“Cristiano makes his own choice” – Bruno Fernandes and his Manchester United teammates in the dark about the Portuguese’s return at Old Trafford

Bruno Fernandes has admitted that he is unsure whether Cristiano Ronaldo will remain at Manchester United this summer. Ronaldo requested that United consider transfer offers for him earlier this summer, but no deal has been made.

The Red Devils granted him time off for family reasons and did not include him in their pre-season tour squad. New manager Erik ten Hag has since hinted that Ronaldo’s stay at the club may be extended, though Fernandes has revealed that the rest of the squad is still in the dark.

“Obviously we have to respect the decision of everyone,” he said. “I don’t know what Cristiano said to the club, to the manager, I don’t know what’s going on in his, but we have to respect his space. From everything we know, he had some family problems, so we have to respect his space, give him some space and that’s it.

“Cristiano was our top scorer last season, he added goals to us, but obviously it’s not on me, it’s the club that has to make the choices and Cristiano makes his own choice. As I said, I don’t know what’s going on in his head, if he wants to leave, it’s all about news. I didn’t ask them that.” he added.

When asked whether he has any contact with his Portuguese captain, this is what Fernandes replied: “The only thing I asked Cristiano, when he didn’t turn up, was if everything was OK with the family, he told me what was going on, that’s it and nothing more.”

Ronaldo returned to United last summer in a €15 million move from Juventus, 12 years after leaving the club and after being heavily linked with archrivals Manchester City, by signing a two-year deal with the option of a third.

However, it has emerged that he has asked to be allowed to leave if an acceptable offer comes in, despite the fact that new manager Erik Ten Hag has insisted that the former Real Madrid superstar is still part of his plans. Following the arrival of new owner Todd Boehly, Chelsea were initially interested in pursuing a deal for Ronaldo, but ultimately decided against it.
