Cristiano Ronaldo was in attendance for the 2023 Globe Soccer Awards on Friday. Erling Haaland was crowned as the Men’s Best Player for 2023 for a sublime season with Manchester City. Even though it was not revealed who came second in the voting, a split-screen featuring Ronaldo and Haaland showed the #7 point in the direction of his competition before the award was announced.
The ceremony, which was held in Dubai, saw the coveted award lifted by a player other than Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese captain had lifted it six times in the last 8 years. Even though Ronaldo ended 2023 as the Global top scorer, Haaland’s 52 goals in 53 games pushed him ahead of the 38-year-old. The Norwegian also played a crucial role in City’s historical treble (Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League).

A video during the ceremony shows how Ronaldo ‘acknowledged’ Erling Haaland as the winner well before the title was announced. He seemed to be gesturing towards his left-hand side, where Haaland was seated.
The award was given to the Man City striker, who failed to beat Lionel Messi to both the 2023 Ballon d’Or as well as the FIFA Best Men’s Player award.

A significant majority of the comments said how Ronaldo doesn’t ‘rob’ individual awards from youngsters unlike a certain Argentine #10. Many were still unhappy that both the Ballon d’Or and FIFA The Best were ‘handed’ to the Argentinian, and not to a more ‘deserving’ Erling Haaland. Many labeled Ronaldo as the GOAT for his selfless gesture. Others opined that Ronaldo was ‘overdoing’ it and intentionally throwing shade on his Argentine rival.
Another well-liked comment mentioned that Ronaldo was only doing it for the cameras. Some were laughing at his gesture, saying that he was trying to get into a ‘top 10 respect moments in football’ video. Fans also praised Ronaldo’s sportsmanship and honesty while drawing differences to that of Lionel Messi, who was absent from the ceremony. Cristiano Ronaldo is currently nursing a calf injury which will see him miss three upcoming games for Al-Nassr.
