Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo was left furious after Al-Hilal fans taunted the player during the Al-Nassr 2-0 loss to rivals Al-Hilal in the Riyadh Season Cup. He angrily responded to the fans’ chanting Lionel Messi‘s name in the stadium.

Al-Nassr suffered a 2-0 defeat to their city rivals Al-Hilal, thanks to goals from Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Ahmed Al-Dawsari. Ronaldo could not do much for his side, despite making an early return from injury. He was left visibly frustrated and furious after Al-Hilal fans taunted him by chanting Lionel Messi’s name during the match. Ronaldo’s displeasure was evident during the post-match guard of honor from Al-Hilal players.

Ronaldo responded to opposing fans in the stadium, by asserting that he was present in the stadium, not Lionel Messi. This is not the first time that such an incident has occurred during the Riyadh derby, with Ronaldo scratching his crotch as a response to Al-Hilal fans chanting Messi’s name during their match against Al-Nassr last year. In one instance, the 39-year-old engaged with the fans, inviting further taunts.

This form of criticism comes after Al-Hilal wished to field Lionel Messi against Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr, but failed to do so. The Argentinean instead opted to join MLS side Inter Miami, in the summer of 2023.
