“Cristiano Ronaldo has never featured in a team as poor as Manchester United”- Jamie Carragher wants Erik ten Hag to get rid of Ronaldo this summer
Jamie Carragher, a former Liverpool player, has requested Erik ten Hag to transfer Cristiano Ronaldo to make his imprint as Manchester United manager. Manchester United had a terrible season, and Ronaldo was the one bright spot, scoring 18 goals in an epic homecoming. United made it into the top six, thanks in large part to Ronaldo’s contributions throughout the season.
Despite this, Carragher has urged Ten Hag to make a significant statement this summer by selling the five-time Ballon d’Or winner. And in doing so, he’ll be able to follow in the footsteps of Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola, who both started strong.
Carragher believes ten Hag can’t risk his rebuild with an aging frontman leading the line next season since the Portuguese star would be 38.
Jamie Carragher speaks about Erik ten Hag’s future plans for Cristiano Ronaldo
Carragher mentioned what Guardiola and Klopp did when they were first hired, stating that they were not scared to make contentious changes. And, as Carragher remarked on The Overlap, Ten Hag should do the same.
“When Pep came into Man City he immediately went, ‘Joe Hart, no.’ And everyone was like, ‘Wow, this is England’s goalkeeper, he’s been a fantastic City player,’ but it was like, ‘No, you’re not here.’
“I believe Benteke was worth £35-40 million, but Klopp said, ‘You’re not for me, out.’ It was as though you made that huge, bold decision right away, causing everyone to sit up and pay attention.
“ten Hag, whether he’s permitted to or not, needs to do it with Cristiano, in my opinion. This is something I’ve been saying all season: that was a bad signing.” He said that Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the best players of all time, and he is viewed as someone who criticizes him.
“Ronaldo is a million times better than I ever was; clearly, I’m not fit to lace his boots, but I’m not saying that to disrespect him – he’s incredible – but Ronaldo has never featured in a team as poor as this.”
He continued by stating that he has always played for great teams, and his mindset of wanting to be the main guy, driving the club forward, and scoring goals is perceived as a plus on a great team.
