“Cristiano Ronaldo is a goal threat but in the rest of the game, they need more; They need young, hungry players”- Wayne Rooney on Manchester United’s current squad balance
In his most recent interview with Sky Sports, Wayne Rooney shared his side regarding the ongoing Manchester united situation. He stated his favorite pick if he would have been Manchester United manager, squad problems, and insights into the Cristiano Ronaldo situation.
Regarding CR7, Wayne Rooney highlighted that Ronaldo isn’t contributing as much as a player in his position as he is supposed to contribute.
“Cristiano is getting on a bit. He isn’t the player he was in his twenties and that happens. That’s Football. He’s a goal threat but in the rest of the game, they need more. They need young, hungry players,” said Rooney.
He has scored goals, important goals in the Champions League early on, he scored a hat-trick against Tottenham, but if you’re looking to the future of the club you have to go with younger, hungry players to do the best to lift Man Utd over the next two or three years,” added the former Manchester United striker.
Wayne Rooney deems Mauricio Pochettino ‘better’ for Manchester United if Cristiano Ronaldo and Paul Pogba leave next season
For starters, the Derby manager claimed Manchester United should choose Mauricio Pochettino over Erik ten Hag as their next manager.
“Pochettino has done it in the Premier League. At Tottenham, he brought a lot of players through,” stated Rooney.
Wayne believes that Mauricio Pochettino has a better understanding of the Premier League requisites and can scout the right players. Even during his stint at Tottenham, the Argentine signed the likes of Son Heung-min, Toby Alderweireld, Dele Ali who went on to become superstars for their club.
Moving forward Rooney stated that the club needs a necessary squad overhaul and the departure of Paul Pogba and Cristiano Ronaldo is imminent.
“I think we have probably got to a point where it’s better for Paul [Pogba] to move on, if he his honest with himself he would see that his impact after returning to manchester hasn’t been what he is capable of and when I watch him play for France and he is a completely different player,” stressed the Derby County manager.
Further describing the Team’s plight he said, “It’s been a strange season, I’ve been to the ground to watch them live a few times and they look like a team of individuals. When they make a mistake it always looks very difficult for them to recover as a team.“
What’s Next for Manchester United?
The Red Devils are battling hard to get a top 4 finish this season to qualify for the champions league next season. Currently sitting 7th in the premier league table they are 3 points behind 4th placed Arsenal.
But the road to glory is still long as the football pundits suggest that manchester united needs some fundamental changes in the squad and further improve the team dynamic once they secure the services of a new manager at the helm of it all tipped to be either Ten Hag or Mauricio Pochettino.
