On 11th March, Al Nassr were knocked out of the AFC Champions League by UAE club Al Ain. They hosted the club, which is based in Abu Dhabi, in the second leg, trailing by a goal from the first leg.
Cristiano Ronaldo, the Al Nassr star, had an important role to play in the match. Regarded as one of the greatest players to grace the game, he needed a clutch performance to ensure his club could qualify to the next round. Unfortunately, a costly miss is a reason behind Al Nassr getting knocked out of the ACL.
In the first half, Al Ain slotted two goals in the Al Nassr, getting their lead to 3-0. They finished the half with a goal from Abdulrahman Ghareeb, finishing the half with the tie score being 3-1. An own goal by Khalid Eisa got Al Nassr a goal behind, and they soon regained control of the match, taking 12 shots.
Ronaldo had a really good chance to score in the 60th minute. Ali Lajami took a shot from inside the box, but the Al Ain keeper saved it. Unfortunately, the ball spilled out, with the keeper unable to deflect it to a safer spot. It fell to the feel of Ronaldo, who had a clear shot on goal, but went wide instead.
Alex Telles scored 12 minutes after the miss, and the game went on to extra-time. In the 103rd Sultan Al-Shamsi scored and got his team the lead. Ronaldo had missed another big chance just minutes later, shooting at the keeper during a 1v1 situation. Luckily for Al Nassr, Ronaldo was fouled in the 116th minute in the box, winning them a penalty which Ronaldo converted.
Fans mock Cristiano Ronaldo for costly miss
The game went on to extra-time, with Al Ain winning 1-3. Misses from Marcelo Brozovic, Alex Telles and Otavio meant the Riyadh-based club were knocked out. Many fans took the opportunity to mock Cristiano Ronaldo for the club’s woes.
Many mocked him for his miss, while some laughed at how he was struggling in Asia. Some called him washed, while others asked him to retire as soon as possible before he ruins his reputation.
Check out their reactions:
Now Al Nassr has only the Saudi Pro League and the Saudi Super Cup to compete in. They are 2nd in the league, being 12 points behind Al Hilal with 11 match weeks to go. They also face the club in the Saudi Super Cup semi-finals, which will be played on 9th April.
