Cristiano Ronaldo “needs to move on” from Manchester United, feels former Premier League player
It is still unclear whether Ronaldo will play the season-opener against Brighton.
As rumors about the disgruntled star’s future spread, Premier League legend Mark Schwarzer is adamant that he thinks he should leave Manchester United.
Ronaldo returned to the team last summer to much excitement, but he has since become bitter since the team has failed to win anything and hasn’t even made it to the Champions League.
The Portuguese star is rumored to be negotiating a transfer away from Old Trafford and missed his club’s tour to Thailand and Australia last month.
Cristiano Ronaldo to leave Manchester United?
Although Ronaldo did on the field in their last preseason encounter against Rayo Vallecano last Saturday, he was taken off before halftime and left Old Trafford with 10 minutes remaining in the game.
Ronaldo will reportedly sit out of United’s opening match against Brighton and Hove Albion because the manager feels he is not yet totally healthy.
Schwarzer acknowledged that the team and Ten Hag handled the current crisis properly and that the player needed to be released.
“He needs to move on at this point.” Schwarzer stated on the Gegen Pod, “I still believe he may offer something to Manchester United, but I don’t see him as a week in and week out starter, which is certainly what he requested last season.
“He was their leading goal scorer, he was the player that got them out of more trouble than anyone else. I kind of understand it. But now you’re talking about building a side.
“For Cristiano Ronaldo, we all know he’s running out of time. He wants to win trophies, he wants to win things, he wants to win another Ballon d’Or for sure, (but I) don’t think that’s going to happen.
“I reckon it’d be amazing if he went to Atletico Madrid… there’s massive resistance from fans and some people from within the club.”
According to reports, European teams Atletico Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, and Bayern Munich all declined the opportunity to sign Ronaldo.
The icon of Portugal is said to be considering a reunion with Sporting Lisbon, the Champions League-eligible team from his youth.
Ten Hag has also made it clear that Ronaldo has to improve his fitness before playing for United in the Premier League this year, and the match against Rayo Vallecano was intended to achieve just that.
