Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo, in an interview with Record, raised eyebrows by casting doubt on the credibility of the Ballon d’Or and FIFA Best awards amid recent discussions. He also clarified that the comments were not aimed at Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, or Erling Haaland.

In a recent statement, the Real Madrid forward stirred controversy by asserting that the Saudi Pro League is more competitive than Ligue 1. Despite his move to Al-Nassr from Manchester United, the 38-year-old was not nominated for the Ballon d’Or or FIFA The Best awards. Lionel Messi won the 2023 Ballon d’Or and the 2024 FIFA Best awards, with Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe securing second and third places. Ronaldo was notably absent from the list of nominees.

The Al-Nassr star criticized the credibility of the Ballon d’Or and FIFA Best awards, emphasizing the importance of evaluating the entire season. He expressed distrust in these awards, noting that his Globe Soccer win didn’t prompt the criticism. Pointing to his impressive stats across multiple competitions last year, he asserted a potential unfair denial of the trophy despite his performance.

Ballon d’Or and The Best are losing credibility. It’s not to say that Messi didn’t deserve it, or Haaland or even Mbappe, but the numbers are there and the numbers don’t deceive. You have to consider the entire season.-

Some football fans would argue that Cristiano Ronaldo deserved to win either of the awards. Especially considering his status as the top goal-scorer of the previous year. He tallied 53 goals across all competitions throughout the entire calendar year.
