Cristiano Ronaldo recently made a statement, taking a veiled dig at longtime rival Lionel Messi. Ronda claimed that the Saudi Pro League is way ahead of MLS following a friendly match against Celta de Vigo, which they lost 5-0. Last December, Ronaldo made an unexpected move to Al-Nassr after his contract with Manchester United expired.
In contrast, Messi took a different route and was introduced as Inter Miami’s latest signing on Sunday evening. The Argentine decided to depart PSG on a free transfer earlier this summer. He had been linked with a potential move to Saudi Arabia, with the World Cup winner snubbing the opportunity to join Al-Hilal on an even bigger contract than his Portuguese counterpart. It was in favor of a switch to Florida. He took this decision in order to satisfy his life after they faced issues settling in Paris.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Saudi Arabia has made huge waves in the current transfer window. Several top stars from Europe and other parts of the world are moving to Saudi teams. Young talents like Ruben Neves, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Jota are some notable examples. In addition to that, experienced veterans Karim Benzema, N’Golo Kante, and Marcelo Brozovic have also moved to Arab.
The attractive contracts offered by the clubs seem to have played a role in these high-profile transfers. This trend is set to continue for many other players in Europe. It includes Liverpool duo Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, who are linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League. On the other hand, Lionel Messi has been joined by his former teammate Sergio Busquets in Miami. Other past compatriots, like Andres Iniesta and Sergio Ramos, are also linked.
Cristiano Ronaldo won’t return to Europe
Cristiano Ronaldo has quashed any speculation that he could return to a major European league, instead pledging his future to the Saudi Pro League. “I’m 100% sure I won’t return to any European club,” the Portuguese superstar said in an interview with a Saudi Arabian TV station. He also claimed that European football other than the Premier League has declined.
Ronaldo said, “I opened the way to the Saudi Pro League – and now all the players are coming here.” His comments come after a mixed first few months in Saudi Arabia. Although he managed to score 14 goals in 19 matches, he has been unable to lead Al-Nassr to silverware. The club finished second in the Saudi Pro League after leading the table when the Real Madrid legend joined.
Ronaldo’s decision to stay in Saudi Arabia is a major boost for the league. He is one of the most marketable athletes in the world, and his presence has already helped to attract more attention to the Saudi Pro League. It remains to be seen whether he will be able to lead Al-Nassr to silverware in the future. However, his decision to stay in Saudi Arabia is a clear sign that he believes in the league’s potential.
