Cristiano Ronaldo wants to be released by Manchester United from his £360,000-a-week contract: Reports

Cristiano Ronaldo is reportedly demanding that his contract at Manchester United be terminated so that he can leave on a free transfer this summer. Ronaldo is desperate to leave Old Trafford and play in the Champions League with another club this season.

After informing the club of his desire to leave, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner missed United’s recent pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia. On the other hand, Manchester United has no intention of selling the Portuguese superstar, who has one year left on his contract.

Ronaldo returned to Man United on Tuesday, accompanied by his agent Jorge Mendes, to hold crisis talks with the club. But those talks failed to persuade Ronaldo to change his mind, and the Portugal captain has now asked to be released from his £360,000-a-week contract, according to the Daily Mail.

Ronaldo will have few options if he leaves United, as Chelsea and Bayern Munich have already turned down the opportunity to sign him this summer. Atletico Madrid has also been linked with the striker, but a return to the Spanish capital for the former Real Madrid star appears unlikely.

Atletico Madrid fans have been vocal in their opposition to the club signing Ronaldo, with a group of supporters unfurling a banner reading “CR7 Not Welcome” during the club’s pre-season friendly against Numancia on Wednesday.

Ronaldo sat in on United’s behind-closed-doors friendly against Wrexham on Wednesday but did not play. He is unlikely to play against Atletico Madrid in their next warm-up match on Saturday in Oslo, Norway, but he may play against Rayo Vallecano at Old Trafford on Sunday when United are expected to field a largely second-string side.
