Often known as one of the greatest players of all time, Cristiano Ronaldo is known for his brilliant mind on and off the field. His footballing brain is said to be unparalleled. But sometimes, even the most clever person in the room can be fooled. Such an incident once happened with Ronaldo.

Cristiano was targeted between in a three-year period between February 2007 and July 2010 when a travel agent cheated the former Manchester United striker out of nearly £250,000. Her name was Maria Silva and she also scammed the Portuguese star’s super-agent Jorge Mendes out of more than £14,000 and former Man Utd winger Nani out of more than £1,500.

The Portuguese news outlet Jornal de Noticias broke the news of Silva’s breach of trust. Cristiano placed immense faith in her as he gave her his credit card details and pin codes. She scammed him for €288,000, out of which £245,770 was for 200 trips Ronaldo never made. The alleged trips were between Portugal and other European countries as well as Europe and Africa and the US.

Silva reportedly carried out the fraud by getting clients to transfer cash for travel she arranged for them. She would transfer that money to her personal account instead of the business account of the travel agency she worked for. She would then bill those trips to the accounts of victims like Cristiano Ronaldo, who had given her a ‘virtual’ credit card and pin code. This helped her to fill the blank spots in her company’s accounts.

The newspaper also reported that Silva used the same tactic to rip off Jorge Mendes, his sports agency Gestifute, Nani, and ex-Everton footballer Manuel Fernandes. Fernandes lost £2,440 due to the fraud and Gestifute lost £36,000. The culprit’s firm Geostar allegedly repaid the fraud victims the money wrongly taken from them. Silva even agreed to pay back monthly compensation to Geostar to skip the prison time.
