Christopher Nkunku, who was forced to withdraw from the France World Cup team owing to injury, has been replaced by Eintracht Frankfurt attacker Randal Kolo Muani.

Prior to their upcoming World Cup campaign, which starts in one week, the 23-year-old will now accompany Didier Deschamps’ squad. After suffering a left knee injury during France’s training session in Clairefontaine, Nkunku hobbled away.

Nkunku, 25, was shown in a video posted by RMC Sport gripping the back of his left leg and appearing to be in pain after being the target of a late challenge by Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga. Then he received help leaving the field. Later, France acknowledged that Nkunku had been forced to leave the team.

After contributing to 11 goals and 8 assists in 23 games this season, Kolo Muani, 23, has become one of Frankfurt’s best performers.

Nkunku has been in excellent form at RB Leipzig, making 23 appearances across all competitions while contributing four assists and scoring 17 goals. A setback to France, who have already lost defender Presnel Kimpembe this week, is the news of Nkunku’s injury. Midfielders Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kante, who assisted France in winning the World Cup four years ago, are already absent for manager Didier Deschamps.

Raphael Varane, Deschamps’ top center back, is expected to face Australia on November 22 after precisely one month since he left Manchester United on crutches with a hamstring injury.

Concerns over Karim Benzema’s fitness also persist. Benzema has played for Real Madrid for less than 30 minutes, coming off the bench in a Champions League match, since winning the Ballon d’Or last month.
