Luka Modric confessed he is not “100%” sure what he will do after the Qatar 2022 World Cup and hinted that he may retire from football soon. The 37-year-old midfielder, who is now preparing for Croatia’s semi-final match against Argentina, has stated that he will make a decision about his future after the competition.

Having joined Los Blancos in August 2012, Modric did mention that it would be a “dream” to finish his career there. “For now, I’m at the World Cup and very focused on Croatia,” the 37-year-old was quoted as saying by Diario AS“Of course I want to retire in Madrid, I’ve said that many times. You can’t say anything for 100 per cent, but that’s my idea, and it’s a dream for me.

Croatia’s success has been greatly attributed to Modric. At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, he guided his country to the finals and even took home the Golden Ball as the competition’s top player. After dominating both the domestic and international scene in 2018, Modric was also named the Ballon d’Or winner.

He won the MVP award ahead of Antoine Griezmann and Cristiano Ronaldo, with Lionel Messi finishing in fifth. After playing a significant part in helping Real Madrid win the LaLiga and Champions League last season, Modric has now hinted at retiring despite showing no signs of slowing down.

The former Tottenham player said the 2022 World Cup in Qatar would be his final major tournament, but he did not specify a timeline for his retirement from domestic football. The 37-year-old stated that he will consider his future when Croatia’s World Cup campaign concludes. He is presently focusing on defeating Argentina in the tournament’s semi-final.

Fans of Real Madrid will be surprised to hear that the 37-year-old is considering retiring as over the years, he has played a crucial role in their success. He has played 454 times for Real Madrid and has contributed to the team’s five Champions League and three La Liga wins. Madrid has nevertheless acquired emerging stars in an effort to build a team for the future with Eduardo Camavinga, Aurelien Tchouameni, and Federico Valverde all waiting on the flanks.
