Barcelona and Brazil legend Dani Alves has had quite the fall from fame after being convicted of raping a woman at a nightclub back in 2022. After being brought to justice and having made to face the consequences of his actions, the former Barcelona right-back faced severe backlash and criticism from the footballing community.
Alves had only served a month of his court-sentenced four-and-a-half year sentence. Rumors of Neymar Jr. paying his former international teammates bail had made rounds on social media. However, it has now been established that even though Neymar was not the one who paid the bail, his father, Neymar Santos Sr. was the one who helped the accused to pay his €1 million bail.
The 23-year-old victim’s lawyer furiously hit out against the court’s subsequent decision to “free” the player.

Rumors suggest that the player used similar means to pay the €150,000 compensation fee of the victim. However, his bail is not unconditional and requires him to relinquish both his Spanish and Brazilian passports so that he does not flee the country.
The Dani Alves scandal: what actually happened?
The footballing community was in shock as news surrounding one of the most decorated footballers of all-time came out. It was reported that the player was accused of raping a woman in a Barcelona nightclub in the early hours of 30th December, 2022. The case was brought to trial in February 2024, during which the player denied all allegations against him.
During the trial, the player, the victim and other experts testified. The victims claim was that she entered the bathroom with the player on her own accord, but was forced to stay against her will when she wanted to leave. After the trial, the court announced that he was proven guilty of rape and that he had to serve a four-and-a-half year sentence.
The player’s lawyers immediately appealed his sentence, and subsequently released Alves on bail of €1 million pending an appeal from Alves. Even though the player made repeated attempts to secure bail prior to being convicted, his requests were turned down on the understanding that he was a possible flight risk. Dani Alves has played for FC Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus among others.
