Former Premier League winner, Danny Drinkwater – who recently retired from professional football at the age of 33 – has lost £782k due to a failed restaurant business. His latest eatery has also suffered after it was announced they were £1.1 Million in debt.
Danny Drinkwater recently learned from liquidators that his Manchester restaurant, FoodWell, opened in 2018, went bankrupt with over £2 million in debt. Located in Salford, the restaurant prided itself on being more than just a dining and workspace; it was a community for people who enjoyed social, inspiring spaces and healthy food. Yet, the restaurant is now at risk of closing due to its financial problems.
Drinkwater won the Premier League with Leicester City in the 2015/16 season, leading to a £35 million move to Chelsea. Unfortunately, his time at Chelsea didn’t go as expected. He only made 12 appearances in five years and spoke about the mental health challenges he faced during this period. The retired footballer said:
It was the darkest I’d felt. It was like I was drowning and forgotten how to swim
He recently retired from football and aims to focus on his food business and personal well-being.
Danny Drinkwater also owns a large part of Manchester restaurant, Firefly which can be found at Salford with the place remaining closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
A look at Danny Drinkwater’s career
Danny Drinkwater spent 10 years in Manchester United‘s youth setup from 1999 to 2009. He was finally promoted to the first team in 2009 however, made zero appearances for the club – being sent out on loan four times – before being sold to Leicester City in 2012.
During Leicester City’s remarkable Premier League season, the player was essential alongside N’Golo Kanté in midfield. After winning the league, he moved to Chelsea, where he reunited with Kanté. However, he was loaned out four times, facing challenges on and off the field, including a 2019 arrest for drunk driving. Retiring at 33, the player has stepped out of the spotlight for good. He frequently discusses his career on podcasts and other platforms.
