Darwin Nunez, the Liverpool No.9, heaped praise upon Uruguayan star, Luis Suarez, claiming that the former Barcelona forward is ideally one of the best strikers in the history of Uruguayan football. Darwin spoke to Uruguayan media outlet, AUF TV post Uruguay’s World Cup qualifier win against Argentina.
Uruguay defeated the 2022 World Champions 2-0, at the La Bombonera in Buenos Aires, as Darwin Nunez scored a brilliant goal. The in-form Liverpool striker has been leading the line for Uruguay and seems to be a perfect replacement for the former Liverpool man, Luis Suarez, for both club and country. Luis, who currently plays for Brazilian side Gremio, was selected to play for the national side this international break, against Argentina and Bolivia.
Following the match, Nunez, in an interview with AUF TV spoke to reporters about how Luis Suarez guided and advised Nunez all throughout these years, and how the team was extremely elated to play with Suarez, whom he labeled as the ‘best striker in the world’. Darwin expressed his desire to emulate ex-Reds star, Luis Suarez and hopes to learn a lot more from the experienced Uruguay legend. He tried to spend as much time as possible with Suarez, whenever they were on national duty.
He’s the best striker in the history of Uruguay. Every time he’s called up I try to sit next to him, drink from his mate and talk about everything. We got to enjoy him because he’s the best striker in the world.
Suarez, who was once famous for his notoriety on the pitch, is arguably one of the greatest players to have played for Uruguay. He is the country’s leading goal scorer with 68 goals in 137 appearances. Nunez will definitely have an eye on Suarez’s multiple records.
Luis Suarez praises Darwin Nunez and calls him one of the ‘best No.9s in the world’
Legendary striker, Luis Suarez praised fellow Uruguayan forward and Liverpool No.9, Darwin Nunez, referring to him as one of the ‘best No.9s in the world’ right now. His statement comes after Nunez scored a magical brace in Uruguay’s 3-0 victory over Bolivia in a World Cup qualifier match.

In-form striker, Darwin Nunez, was also on the score sheet in Uruguay’s win over Argentina last week, after some stellar performances for Premier League club Liverpool this season. Nunez has scored 5 goals in 6 appearances for the national side, this season. Suarez put a lot of faith in the Liverpool forward, expecting him to inherit the No.9 position and be his successor.
In an interview after the match, the ex-Barca and Liverpool man highlighted the importance of supporting Darwin Nunez and other young players of the national side. Further, he also praised for the team’s consistently good performances since the end of the 2022 World Cup. Suarez while speaking to reporters said that he is more than happy to be the mentor to the Liverpool No.9.
I have one of the best No 9s in the world ahead of me. We have to support him and enjoy him. Today I am in another role [than before] and I am happy to be here helping the group.
Suarez is currently playing for the Brazilian club Gremio. He is in the final days of his incredible career which will be remembered by football fans for years to come.
