Darwin Nunez has been in top form for both the Uruguay National Team and Liverpool this season. The 24-year-old has racked up goal contributions in each of the past 7 games. His recent form has earned him much praise on social media, after a frustrating initial season at the club. His lack of goals in the 2022/23 season made many criticize his £85 million price tag.
However, the Uruguayan striker has turned things around at Liverpool this season. His 11 G/A for Liverpool this season has catapulted Liverpool to 4th in the Premier League and top of their Europa League group.
The Reds took on Bournemouth in their most recent game on Thursday. It was Nunez’s brilliant strike that earned Liverpool the 2-1 victory and subsequently the progression in the EFL Cup.
His 70th-minute strike has gone viral on social media, with fans praising the player’s ‘unreal’ finishing ability. The Uruguayan picked up the ball from a counter when Trent Alexander-Arnold pinged the ball to the #9 as he was the farthest upfront. Even though his first touch let him down, Nunez quickly made up for it.
Picking up the ball just outside the left-hand side of the penalty box, he took a deft touch to the right to beat his marker. He then unleashed a blistering shot, which dipped into the net, out of the keeper’s reach. The game ended 2-1, and Liverpool moved on to the quarterfinals where they are set to face West Ham.
Liverpool defeat Bournemouth in EFL RO16 clash
Jurgen Klopp’s side were up against fellow Premier League club Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup on Thursday. Goals from Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez ensured that Liverpool did not make an early exit from the competition.
Liverpool took control of the game early on through Cody Gakpo. A blistering shot from Harvey Elliott deflected into the path of an unmarked Gakpo in the box. The Dutchman was the first to react, beating the Bournemouth keeper and defense to the ball.
The Cherries equalized from a set piece, halfway into the second half as Justin Kluivert got on the end of Alex Scott’s corner. Kluivert slotted home from a tight angle to bring the scores level. As the game was in the balance, Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez produced a moment of brilliance to seal the game.
The win ensured progression for Liverpool on a night when both Manchester United and Arsenal were eliminated from the competition. The Reds have been drawn against West Ham United in the quarter-finals of the competition. West Ham eliminated the Gunners by 3 goals to 1 to qualify for the quarter-finals.
