David De Gea to accept pay cut in order to extend his stay at Manchester United: Reports
Manchester United keeper David de Gea
With manager Erik ten Hag still not convinced that goalkeeper David De Gea is the ideal fit for his system, Manchester United is allegedly considering offering him a new contract with lower wages. Since 2011, De Gea has been United’s first-choice goalkeeper, and he is on course to reach the club’s all-time top 10 appearance holders.
The Spanish goalkeeper’s contract expires this summer, and it’s unclear if United will renew it because manager ten Hag is still not satisfied that the goalie suits his system. According to The Athletic, the 31-year-old will have to accept a considerable pay cut from his current weekly salary of £375,000 in order to stay at Old Trafford.
De Gea had previously stated that he would be willing to accept a pay cut in order to stay at United for the foreseeable future. According to the same reports, the team is reportedly scouting goalkeepers like Porto’s Diogo Costa and Athletic Bilbao’s Unai Simon as they search for a new keeper in the future. Given that De Gea has played in each of United’s 15 games since ten Hag took over this summer, the situation is strange.
The Dutchman, however, previously said when asked about De Gea’s expiring contract: “We didn’t make a decision on him but what I can say is that I am really happy with David de Gea as a keeper. His first two performances of the season were not his best but after you see he brings us a lot for the defence department, gives stability and as a person I like him – I can cooperate with him really well. But first we go to the winter and then we will talk about how to deal with this.”
Why Manchester United may want to get rid of their 3-time best player winner David De Gea?
A goalkeeper who can play out from the back and support his defence with his feet is essential to the former Ajax manager ten Hag’s plan. With his disastrous performance as United were destroyed 4-0 by Brentford earlier this season, De Gea has thus far failed to demonstrate that he fits into that style of play.
The experienced goalkeeper appears to have changed his style of play as United’s fortunes have improved since the season’s start, but he occasionally still chooses to pump the ball long rather than deliver it short to his defenders. As a result, it has been claimed that United scouts are keeping an eye on Simon and Costa as potential long-term replacements for the Spaniard.
