Former Barcelona forward David Villa in a recent interview with GOAL, surprised fans by selecting his friend and fellow Spanish forward Fernando Torres as his preferred player, even choosing Torres over himself.

The 42-year-old Villa shared a fantastic bond with ex-Liverpool forward Fernando Torres during their time representing the Spanish national team. As Spain’s all-time leading scorer, the prolific Barcelona striker participated in 765 matches, netting 382 goals in his career. He played for Barcelona, Valencia and Atletico Madrid.

On the other hand, Fernando Torres, who also spent much of his career at the Colchoneros, was recognized as one of the finest forwards of his era. Both of them played a major role in Spain’s 2008 European Championship and 2010 FIFA World Cup triumph.

Maintaining a strong friendship beyond their playing careers, both Villa and Torres retired from football in 2020 and 2019, respectively. In an interview, David Villa was tasked with playing the ‘Winner Stays On’ challenge. When faced with the choice between Torres and contemporary forwards such as Robert Lewandowski, Sergio Aguero, Karim Benzema, Luis Suarez, and Harry Kane, he opted for the former Chelsea star. Similarly, when asked to choose between Torres and legendary Real Madrid forward, Raul, he expressed his preference for Torres, thus highlighting the admiration he holds for Torres.

Moreover, when David Villa was asked to decide to pick between Torres and himself, he initially suggested it would be a draw. However, in a surprising turn, he changed his decision, stating that he chose Fernando Torres over himself as well.
