De Jong was Erik ten Hag’s top target during the summer transfer window as he looked to bolster Manchester United’s midfield. The Red Devils and Barcelona finally reached an agreement for him after protracted discussions.
In a £72 million agreement, Manchester United and Barcelona agreed that the central midfielder will transfer to Old Trafford.

Manchester United then started corresponding with De Jong and his group in an effort to negotiate a contract. However, for a few reasons, they were unable to seal the second agreement. First off, he owed £17 million in late payments to Barcelona. De Jong was also informed that he would forfeit this cash if he left the Camp Nou.

Second, representing Barca has long been the Dutchman’s dream. And only three years into his La Liga tenure, he was unwilling to leave them for Man Utd. Of course, there must have been some conflict between De Jong and senior Barca executives due to the £17 million in unpaid pay. Despite this, he still had a tremendous ambition to play for them and for Xavi.
