Manchester City forward, Erling Haaland came good on his promise with Chelsea legend, Didier Drogba as the 23-year-old replicated the Ivorian’s iconic celebration after scoring against BSC Young Boys in the UEFA Champions League. A penalty in the 23rd minute of the game gave the Norwegian his 14th goal of the season.
At the Ballon d’Or Gala – which was held on the 30th of October – Erling Haaland was asked to replicate either the 2012 Champions League winner, Didier Drogba’s goal celebration or that of ex-Barca player, Gary Lineker‘s.

Haaland on the night stated:
I celebrate at the moment, so I'll think of both of you when I score my next goal and will decide!
However, it was Drogba who was remembered on the night. Haaland’s first goal saw the player pump his arms out by his side. Drogba recognized the promise that was kept and shared the clip on his Instagram. He captioned the clip, “MAN OF YOUR WORDS”, tagging the player in the post.
Meanwhile, it was a comfortable evening for the blue side of Manchester as a 3-nil win maintained their perfect Champions League record this season. Young Boys were unable to cope with Pep Guardiola‘s dominant side as the team from Switzerland did not manage a single shot on target the night.
With Erling Haaland and Phil Foden on the scoresheet for the night, Manchester City have booked their place in the Round of 16 where they will await the other teams to join their ranks. For now, they look forward to the Premier League as they face Chelsea and Liverpool in quick succession.
Can Erling Haaland and Manchester City repeat their success of last season?
Before the 2023/24 season began, Erling Haaland stated on the ‘Impaulsive podcast’ that he wished to build off of the successes of last season to which KSI laughed and replied, “This guy wants to build off a treble.”

Manchester City are clear favorites to win the Premier League this season. Plus, they are on course for their 4th consecutive title. A perfect record in the Champions League has also shown that Pep’s team is not slacking off after winning their first-ever Champions League title last season.
Ahead of the season’s start, the debate was whether the players would have the ‘hunger and desire’ to repeat their success from last season. So far so good, as the team has answered the critics well.
