Portuguese forward Diogo Jota saw the funnier side of things of Liverpool not qualifying for the UEFA Champions League next season. The Portuguese forward, during an interview with FourFourTwo earlier on Sunday, expressed his relief as Liverpool will not have to play Real Madrid. The 2019 UCL Champions finished fifth in the Premier League and have failed to qualify for the UCL this season.

Real Madrid defeated Jurgen Klopp’s team in the final in 2022, but they also fell to them in the quarterfinals and round of 16 in 2021 and 2023, respectively. Due to the team’s failure to make the Champions League, Liverpool are unlikely to play Real this season. Jurgen Klopp’s side had a difficult season overall, failing to place in the top four for the first time since 2015–16.

Although they at least recovered enough to finish fifth and earn a spot in the Europa League thanks to an 11-game unbeaten streak to close off the season. The forward for Liverpool then discussed his views on competing in the Europa League. He made fun of not having to play Real Madrid this year and referred to the competition as a downgrade.

He said, “I played in the Europa League before with Wolves. Although the fans are used to playing in the Champions League every single year and it will feel like a downgrade, it’s still a prestigious competition. We’ll give our best to win it. They (Real Madrid) can somehow finish third in their group and still be in our way. Since I came to Liverpool, I’ve always got knocked out by Real Madrid, so hopefully they’re not there!”
