Diego Simeone, the head coach of Atletico Madrid, has reportedly told the club’s president, Gil Marin, that he plans to leave in January and end his 11-year tenure with the Spanish giants. The Argentine manager has not had the best start to the season, coming against a 1-0 loss to Barcelona in their recent encounter. He boasts of having felt special when they won the league at Atletico, compared to other leagues where they face two powerhouses in Real Madrid and Barcelona.
While giving his match interview to AS, Simeone said, “We have won a league against Messi, Iniesta, Alexis, Xavi, Busquets… Ronaldo, Bale, Benzema.” Having set a new legacy at the Spanish club, the Atletico boss boasts of his achievements, saying it’s ‘extraordinary’ when his club achieves something as everyone expects the two stronghold clubs always to be ahead of them.
The Argentinian considers his achievements against the best of the game, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, to be their failures since he was able to reignite the Spanish club’s name in the complexities and tough competition of the modern game, dominated by the two.
Simeone, not known as one of the more humble managers, takes pride in his work at Atletico, demanding praise. For the way his team has set a name for themselves for being a tough club to face and their defensive strategies, he feels underappreciated by the media. In the recent pre-season friendlies held in South Korea, Simeone’s Atletico beat Manchester City in a 2-1 encounter, not ultimately revenge for their champions league meeting, but he was satisfied.
Diego Simeone’s legacy at Atletico Madrid and his future plans
Diego Simeone has established himself as one of the great modern managers over a decade in charge of Atletico Madrid with fewer resources than other European Giants. “My personality as a manager is down to the essence of my family and of being Argentinian. There are also shades of when I was a footballer in Italy and Spain,” Simeone said.
Having built one of Europe’s most recognisable teams, with its unique style at the top. Being one of the highest-paid managers in the game, he has enjoyed remarkable success. Under his guidance, the club has featured in two Champions League finals and has won La Liga twice. His departure will definitely be a tough time to digest.
Witnessing where the Argentine takes his management skills next will be interesting. Will we see him take over a national team amid interest from countries, or will he decide to stay in Europe?
