Portuguese attacker Matheus Nunes, who joined Wolves last summer for £42 million from Sporting Lisbon, had halted his training with the club in a bold bid to secure a move to Manchester City. The reigning Premier League champions initially had a £47 million bid rejected for Nunes.
As Nunes continued to stay away from training, disciplinary action loomed. Wolves‘ head coach, Gary O’Neil, already faced challenges with the absence of Hwang Hee-chan due to a hamstring injury. Privately, Wolves were deeply frustrated with Nunes’ decision to boycott training. The club invested heavily in him, paying Sporting an initial £38 million plus £4.2 million in add-ons, and his actions have left a sour taste.
However, there is a silver lining for Wolves as they have secured a substantial profit from Nunes’ sale and leveraged a cost-effective deal for Manchester City midfielder Tommy Doyle on loan, with an option to buy for just £5 million. With Mancity’s Sporting Director Txiki being a fan of the player and Pep hailing him as ‘One of the Best Players,’ the transfer is justified at £53m from City’s perspective. This strategic maneuver has strengthened the squad, providing competition and depth.
Amid these challenges, Wolves remain determined to move forward and face the future with resilience. While the departure of Matheus Nunes is disappointing, the club is focused on building a competitive team that can excel in the Premier League and beyond.
Manchester City could lose Erling Haaland
Manchester City could be facing the prospect of losing their star striker, Erling Haaland, in just one year’s time. The details of his contract’s release clause have come to light. Haaland, who joined Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund for a fee of £51.2 million last summer, has been nothing short of prolific, amassing an astonishing 52 goals in 53 appearances across various competitions, including the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup.
According to Spanish outlet El Debate, Haaland’s release clause is set at a surprisingly low £150 million, which would not break the current transfer record for a player. Importantly, this release clause is expected to become active starting from the following year. This revelation means that Manchester City will need to act swiftly to negotiate a new contract with the 23-year-old if they aim to avoid the activation of this clause.
Haaland’s agent, Rafaela Pimenta, had previously kept the details of the release clause shrouded in mystery. Pimenta has not ruled out the possibility of a transfer, stating, “The open door can mean a lot of things. Our players can have the feeling that they have their destiny in their hands.” This suggests that Haaland’s future remains uncertain and open to interpretation. Hence, Manchester City faces a crucial decision to secure their star striker’s future and prevent his potential departure next year.
