Carlo Ancelotti was asked about Vinicius Junior‘s character issues during this La Liga season. “Does Vinicius deserve a red card for his behavior and protests?” Ancelotti: “Red? Don’t you think he has been receiving enough yellow cards? That’s enough.” The Real Madrid coach has often expressed his displeasure at how often Vinicius sees a yellow card.
However, he has also defended the Brazilian during times. While regarding the protests Vinicius emphasized he replied, “It’s clear that you don’t gain anything by protesting, but it’s surprising that he has ten yellow cards. The toughest midfielder in La Liga does not have ten cards. He’s been given too many cards and less than those who have kicked him.”
The 22-year-old has the most yellow cards for Real Madrid this season. While it can be argued that he receives rough treatment from his opponents, he has failed to keep his cool at times which ultimately leads to the booking. Ancelotti has said of Vinicius being targeted by rivals on and off the pitch, with racist abuse continuing to be aimed in his direction on an alarmingly regular basis.
Vinicius, who netted the winning goal for Real in the 2022 Champions League final has starred again for the Blancos this season, with the 22-year-old Brazil international registering 19 goals and 16 assists through 46 appearances in all competitions. Real Madrid faces Real Sociedad on Wednesday followed by the Copa del Ray final and the Champions League semifinal against Osasuna and Manchester City respectively.

Carlo Ancelotti was pleased with his team’s performance in the press room after the drubbing of Almeria. The Italian coach revealed that he emphasized to his team the need to be more focused on defense, something that worked except in two specific cases that made him angry. He believes, however, that these two warnings will do the team good and he prefers to embrace the excellent form of his attacking trident.
One negative aspect of the match was Vinicius Jr’s yellow card, which will see him miss the next LaLiga Santander match through suspension. Ancelotti was bemused by this outcome, with the Italian questioning how the Brazilian has amassed more cautions than a player he dubbed as ‘the dirtiest in La Liga’. “It’s surprising that he has ten yellow cards. The dirtiest midfielder in La Liga doesn’t even have 10 cards,” Ancelotti claimed in his post-match press conference.
“The yellow card thing is complicated. This protest is yellow, of course, but the referee is a judge who is very focused on the match. Protests can’t affect the rest of the match, it can’t be that a referee doesn’t whistle because a player protests.” The Brazilian has been a key player for Real Madrid this season being an undisputed starter in the left flank. He will be eligible to play again in the Copa del Rey final against Osasuna where he hopes to make an impact.
