With the AFCON group stages coming to a close and the Round of 16 getting underway, fans have dubbed the competition to be one of the most ‘wild’ and unexpected editions in its history. As Egypt were knocked out early in the absence of star man Mohamed Salah, their opponents DR Congo achieved a surprising feat. With zero wins to show in the group stage, Congo qualified in second place from group F.

However, while one would expect Congo to ‘win’ against Egypt, that didn’t happen either. Surprisingly, Congo were ‘winless’ in 120 minutes against Egypt as well, forcing fans to highlight how a team who haven’t managed to win a single game find themselves in the last 8 of AFCON. From early group-stage knockouts to wonder goals, the 2024 AFCON has had it all. With the knockout getting underway, fans can expect more of the same.

Looking back at Congo’s record, the team has not managed to score more than one goal in any of their games. They drew all three games against Zambia, Morocco, and Tanzania respectively. While Congo scored one goal in their first two group-stage games, they played out a goalless draw against Tanzania.

Surprisingly, three points were enough to see them through, as both Zambia and Tanzania were eliminated having just two points.

Fans are in shock as DR Congo find themselves in the last 8 of AFCON

DR Congo have become the latest surprise in AFCON after their shocking victory over Egypt in the Round of 16. However, what was more surprising was their ‘winless’ record up until this point in the competition. A fan commented that this was a mirror image of what Portugal managed to do in the 2016 Euros. However, Cristiano Ronaldo and Co. qualified as the best third-place team. A fan summed up Congo’s tactics as ‘draw and inshallah’.

Many were surprised at their share of luck, having made it so far in the competition. Others were pushing for them to go all the way, even though that looks unlikely. Congo have been getting all the hype, given the last time they beat Egypt in AFCON, they won the tournament. Others had high praise for Congo goalkeeper Lionel M’Pasi, who scored the winning penalty.

The keeper had never taken a penalty in his senior career, but expertly dispatched his strike against Egypt to earn them progression. With AFCON heating up, and Egypt and Ghana already out of the competition, countries like Nigeria, Senegal, and Morocco will look to bring the coveted trophy home. Cape Verde take on Mauritania and Senegal take on Ivory Coast in today’s late kick-off.
