Former Manchester United midfielder, Dwight Yorke commented upon the Red Devils’ poor season, attributing it to the club’s transfer strategy. He insisted that United should have invested in established forwards instead of Rasmus Hojlund, labeling the Danish player as a ‘rookie’ unable to address the team’s frontline issues.
The former player-turned-manager, who made a total of 615 club football appearances for English and Australian clubs, shared the field with top-tier forwards like Andrew Cole, Teddy Sheringham, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in his time at Old Trafford. He had a respectable four-season tenure at Manchester, featuring in 152 matches and netting 65 goals before leaving for Blackburn Rovers in 2002. Subsequently retiring in 2009, he recently managed the A-League team, Macarthur.
The ex-Red Devils star criticized Manchester United’s management for relying on young Danish striker Hojlund in the attack. Yorke highlighted the lack of significant results from the club’s investment in the youngster, suggesting he’s a concern in Erik ten Hag’s squad. He proposed that instead of opting for the young Dane, the club should have pursued established players like Erling Haaland, Harry Kane, or Victor Osimhen.
Dwight Yorke views Hojlund as a ‘rookie’ unable to match the iconic players who previously graced United’s forward line.
You can't bring a rookie in to do a man's job, it just doesn't work. I think they should have paid £150m for Haaland. Harry Kane is an obvious choice. And Osimhen is another I would have tried for. I feel sorry for the kid Rasmus, he’s suffering all around. I didn’t know anything about him until he came to United for such a huge fee. He’s 20 years of age, never had top-level experience, and you can see he’s in that development stage.Dwight Yorke said to Daily Mail
While the 20-year-old forward could potentially achieve similar heights, the demanding standards at Manchester United, where fans expect rapid success, would amplify the focus on struggling players more than at other clubs.
Rasmus Hojlund’s stats since his arrival at Manchester United
The 20-year-old Danish forward, Rasmus Hojlund, who was signed for a substantial fee of £64 million plus £8 million in performance-related add-ons, has failed to live up to his price tag. Despite glimpses of promise this season, the Denmark international has yet to score his debut Premier League goal in 14 appearances for Manchester United.
The young Danish talent was brought in from Atalanta following an impressive debut Serie A campaign, where he netted 10 goals across 34 matches. Despite not being known for prolific scoring, his overall contributions helped Atalanta secure fifth place in the Italian league last season.
Since joining Old Trafford, he has scored 5 goals in 6 appearances for Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League, including two against former club Copenhagen, two against Galatasaray, and one against Bayern Munich. However, his underwhelming performances in the Premier League are the reason for him facing criticism from numerous fans who argue that he lacks scoring prowess. Surprisingly, Hojlund is without a goal in 14 league appearances.
