“€10m for PSG and Nasser is a cup of coffee!” – LaLiga President’s jibe at PSG over its recent booking
LaLiga president Javier Tebas believes the penalties imposed on Paris Saint-Germain are too lenient, comparing the cost to the club of potential fines to “a cup of coffee.” Under the direction of chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi, the Ligue 1 team, which is owned by Qatar Sports Investments, is one of the most financially extravagant teams in European football.
PSG’s transactions have come under harsh criticism from experts; the club was previously assessed a €65 million fine for Financial Fair Play violations, with €55 million suspended. Tebas, however, believes that these consequences are too mild for the French team, which he accuses of undermining the sport’s rules.
“€10m for PSG and Nasser is a cup of coffee!” he told L’Equipe. “Sanctions have to be dissuasive and also affect the sporting side of things. “That has not been the case with those that were taken. These penalties don’t work, they have to be sanctioned now.”
“Over the last six or seven seasons, PSG have lost a billion euros. They are breaking the European football ecosystem. How can other clubs compete with someone who has losses of one billion euros? It’s difficult,” he added.
According to LaLiga president, PSG has amassed more than €1 billion in losses
As reported by Diario AS, PSG made a loss of €350m for the 2021-22 season, which piles on to the loss of €224m from the previous season. Those losses are without taking into the new contract for Kylian Mbappe, which will cost the club €630m over the next three seasons.
According to Tebas, PSG have made losses of €1b over the last six or seven seasons, which totally unbalances the playing field. While Tebas might be correct in much of his assessment, the chances of UEFA taking serious action seem slim. It should not go unmentioned that Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid are all sporting debts of around €1b or more themselves.
