Talk about seizing the opportunity! Arsenal No.10 and ‘forgotten man’ Emile Smith Rowe earned a rare start under Mikel Arteta over Jorginho as Arsenal took on Luton Town at the Emirates. The midfielder came prepared as he wreaked havoc in midfield for the Gunners, playing a significant part in both of Arsenal’s goals in their 2-0 win. To top things off, the Englishman was awarded the Man of the Match award for his sublime display against Luton.
Despite winning 100% of his tackles and making two interceptions during the game, it was his stats in the attacking quadrant that really stood out. His first start in over two months wasn’t uneventful to say the least. He won back the ball from Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu, setting off the chain of events that led to Arsenal’s first goal of the game.
He wasn’t done yet, as his cross into the area just before half-time led to Arsenal’s second, as it deflected off of Daiki Hashioka and into the net for an own-goal. The player impressed many with his work-rate, covering a lot of ground and linking up particularly well with Leandro Trossard in the left flank.
Following the game, fans were convinced that Smith Rowe had to be given a chance by the manager to prove himself in the squad.
Fans react to Emile Smith Rowe’s brilliant performance against Luton Town
What better way to make use of a rare start than playing a part in both of one’s teams goals in a 2-0 win. Smith Rowe’s work-rate and display impressed fans as many called for him to stay at the club. Another said that this was the best way he could have possibly made use of the opportunity. Another even said that he should be starting every single game over Jorginho.
With rumors pointing to Jorginho’s potential departure from the club, many believe that this might be the way back in for the Englishman. Some were left speechless by the 23-year-old’s display, with one particular fan stating that he was the Croydon De Bruyne. Many stated their happiness at how the ‘outcast’ finally found his way back into the squad.
Once a regular starter for the Gunners, Mikel Arteta has gradually opted to pick Italian maestro Jorginho over the youngster. The Champions League winner however, has been linked with a move away from the club and may even find himself in Serie A next season. With significant confusion as to who will be a part of the Gunners’ midfield next season, Emile Smith Rowe‘s recent performance has given him a significant boost to the same.
