Emmanuel Petit, a former Chelsea player, has criticized the club’s two recent summer acquisitions, Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo, suggesting that their decision to join Chelsea was solely motivated by financial incentives. Petit asserted that Caicedo and Lavia should have signed with Liverpool instead of Chelsea.

This perspective comes from Emmanuel Petit, who previously wore the Chelsea jersey in the 2000s. “Sometimes it is justified, but most of the time it’s not. It shows how much you want that player and your willingness to pay for them.” Caicedo and Lavia made headlines due to their significant transfers to Chelsea, amounting to £115 million and £55 million, respectively.

“If I am Caicedo or Lavia, I am going to Liverpool instead of Chelsea because I can’t see a clear plan for what is happening at Chelsea.“Their choices have sparked discussions, especially considering that Liverpool, a club engaged in European competitions, was also pursuing their signatures. He continued, “For me, the answer is very easy. If you ask somebody why Caicedo and Lavia decided to go, the answer is just money. Money talks for the clubs and the players.”

Chelsea has secured the signing of midfielder Romeo Lavia, who was previously sold by Manchester City to Southampton last summer. Manchester City had included clauses to safeguard against Lavia’s exceptional performance. However, Chelsea’s swift interest and subsequent acquisition, valued at an initial £53 million with an additional £5 million in potential add-ons, have surpassed Liverpool’s pursuit.

Manchester City stands to gain around £8 million to £9 million in profit, considering the initial payment and potential add-ons, following Lavia’s sale to Chelsea. This deal elevates City’s academy sales income to a confirmed £50.25 million for this window, with the prospect of an extra £13.6 million from potential add-ons. This figure surpasses their previous best of £46.5 million secured last year, with a chance for an additional £6.5 million.

In parallel with their academy successes, Manchester City has welcomed Thomas Krucken, former head of youth development at VfB Stuttgart, as their new academy director. This change follows the departure of Jason Wilcox, who moved to Southampton as their director of football after the previous season. Pep Guardiola had earlier stated that Lavia ‘exploded‘ at Southampton, making his career start exciting.
