On 13th March, Atletico Madrid became the last team to confirm their spot in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. They beat the last year’s runners-up, Inter Milan, in a penalty shootout, as the 210 minutes ended with the aggregate score of 2-2.
Going into the match 1-0 down, they conceded a goal in the 33rd minute by Federico Dimarco. Antoine Griezmann scored just minutes later, but Atletico still needed a goal to equalize the score. The goal came late in the 87th minute, thanks to Memphis Depay.
In extra time, both teams failed to score a single goal. Both teams took a combined 11 shots in those 3 minutes, but only two were on target. The game finally went to penalties, with Atletico winning it. Jan Oblak made two crucial saves, while Lautaro Martinez missed his penalty.
While the Atletico players celebrated their hard-fought win, their manager Diego Simeone was clearly unfazed. He was uneasy when the penalties were on, but as his team ran on to the pitch to celebrate, he just moved in his technical box. The Argentinian didn’t react as his team made it to the next round.
