On 29th January, 2024, Manchester United traveled to Newport to face Newport County AFC in the FA Cup. Everyone expected an easy win for Erik ten Hag and his men, but struggled as Newport managed to score two past them. The game ended with United winning 4-2, moving forward in the competition.
After the game concluded, both teams exchanged pleasantries and the United manager asked for a moment with Graham Coughlan, the manager of the home team. As the two met, the Dutchman took out a bottle of 2013 Antinori Tignanello.
Ten Hag gifted the bottle, which is worth £230, to the Newport Manager and informed him the wine was selected by the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson.
Coughlan, who is a boyhood United fan, jokingly said he preferred Budweiser, an American Beer brand.
Brilliant. You know I don't drink wine, I drink Budweiser.Graham Coughlan
While knowing the Newport manager was joking, ten Hag seemed concerned that he preferred the American beer.
Really, Budweiser? American beer? But this is a really very good one chosen by Sir Alex so maybe your wife will enjoy it. Maybe take a taste, I think you will like it. Well done for tonight.Erik ten Hag
Coughlan told the media about the United manager gifting him the bottle of red wine, and joked that no should tell ten Hag he doesn’t like red wine.
Newport County fans serenade Erik ten Hag with “Sacked in the morning”
Erik ten Hag has been struggling in the current season. United stands 8th and were not in any European competition as well. With the FA Cup bringing their only chance at winning any trophy, he must’ve been happy drawing Newport County, but they hit a huge roadblock.
Bruno Fernandes scored in the 7th minute, thanks to an assist by Antony. Kobbie Mainoo doubled the lead just six months later. They lost the lead as Bryn Morris and Will Evans scored, getting the score to 2-2. As the Newport fans celebrated the win, they started to sing, “Sacked in the morning.” to Ten Hag to mock him.
United did end up winning the game, with Antony and Rasmus Hojlund scoring. After the game, ten Hag said he always felt in control of the match and was not concerned. He further added that he still aimed to win the Premier League, along with the FA Cup.
