Manchester United have not had the best of campaigns this season. Manager Erik ten Hag and his players have been ‘dragged through the mud’ on several occasions. However, ever since the turn of the new year, the club have managed to find their footing. The club has not dropped points since the 2-2 draw in mid-January. Sunday’s game against Aston Villa was no different either, as the Reds clinched a late win on enemy turf.
Manager Erik ten Hag has time and again come under pressure following the horrid showing of his boys on multiple occasions. However, the ‘winning streak’ has seemingly breathed confidence into both the manager and his players. Following the win on Sunday, the manager told the press that United are capable of winning against any team in the league.
He said,
I think we can beat any opponent, be it home or away. Away we have to believe it a little bit more. In Arsenal, where we deserved to win, and in Liverpool. It's about belief.
He also added that the club strongly believed against Villa, and hence the comeback victory.
United are currently in sixth spot and have closed the gap between them and Aston Villa to just 5 points. The Red Devils will take on Luton Town and Fulham in their next 2 games in the Premier League.
Rasmus Hojlund and Scott McTominay fire Man United past Aston Villa
United have now completed four back-to-back victories in all competitions. The Red Devils were a rejuvenated side against Unai Emery‘s men at Villa Park. Rasmus Hojlund has been a man on a mission ever since Sean Millis landed in England. The striker has bagged 5 goals and 2 assists in his last 5 games for the club. Sunday was no different as the #11 bagged his side’s opener in the game.
The Danish striker made no mistake to guide the ball past Emiliano Martinez after the ball fell invitingly to him from a corner. Douglas Luiz pulled the hosts level in the second half, putting the game in the balance for the final 20 minutes. As the crowd was well expecting the game to end on level terms, up stepped Scott McTominay to save the day. Scott’s powerful header eluded Martìnez’s reach, spoiling the hosts’ hopes of security a point.
The win added extra delight to Rasmus Hojlund, who attained a praise-worthy record amidst his recent scoring streak. The 21-year-old became the second younger footballer to score in five consecutive games, second only to legendary Arsenal and Chelsea player Nicolas Anelka. While the goal scorers received most of the praise, McTominay credited Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane for their solid performance at the back, earning them an important win on the road.
