England Women won their first ever major trophy when they overcame Germany after extra-time in front of a packed-out Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

Lionesses substitute Ella Toone broke the deadlock with a brilliant goal just after the hour mark before Germany’s Lina Magull equalized to take the final to extra-time. In the extra period, it was another substitute, Chloe Kelly, who wrote her name into national folklore by scoring the Euro 2022 winning goal.

The prize package was pre-agreed upon by the team and the Football Association, with a bonus of £55,000 for lifting the trophy. Though not insignificant, it is only a fraction of Ronaldo’s massive salary at Manchester United. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is said to earn £385,000 per week. That works out to £55,000 per day.

The bonus awarded to England Womens’ team is also insignificant in comparison to what Gareth Southgate’s men’s team would have received. Southgate’s team was promised £300,000 just for making the final, and they would have received £460,000 if they had defeated Italy in last year’s final at Wembley.

Euro 2022 final: England v Germany as it happened

England win the Women EURO

Chloe Kelly and Ella Toone wrote themselves into English football history as Sarina Wiegman’s brilliant Lionesses beat Germany 2-1 after extra time in a tension-packed Euro 2022 final.

Toone put England in front at Wembley with a classy finish in the 62nd minute, but Germany stung the hosts when Lina Magull equalised with 11 minutes left of normal time.

It became the first Women’s Euros final since 2001 to go to extra time. Chloe Kelly poked in a 110th-minute winner, tearing off her shirt and sprinting away in celebration. England had never won a senior European Championship, but after the men’s team went agonisingly close last year, the women, led by skipper Leah Williamson, have gone one better.
